Can you guys pick which words get censored?

If so, can you un-check the word "cra_p" and anything else similar.

I know that Wow still censors the word "grape", its a little ridiculous.

Redact is the hip new swear. All the kids are using it. :)

While I swear like a sailor in appropriate company, I don't mind the censoring here. You can generally tell what someone said by its context. I tend to auto-complete it in my head.

Ya, its not a huge deal, but people usually read the censor as a cuss word, which can make your post sound more harsh or mean than you really intended it. Those words above give a lighter tone to a post.

Could it be possible to turn the censor off somewhere on your profile settings? I personally don't see the point in having one and I find it disturbing. If you guys really require a censor please let it be optional (maybe related to the age they gave when they signed up).

The censor remains. Actually serves a very important purpose of cutting down on the amount of work Team mod has to do - we don't have to keep editing posts for foul language and certain NDA-covered content this way!

    Sorry :)

I totally understand about the NDA-covered content. But I don't understand how foul language would be an issue if the censor becomes optional. Personally I don't understand why 'foul' language is ever considered problematic but that's just me.

Well it all depends on how people use the ''foul'' language. If it targets a person it can be considered very offensive to some people.
But if it's just used in normal texts or in funny comments, then it can be considered ''normal''?
Also don't forget that some ''foul'' words can be more offensive in England then in the US or other english speaking coutries.

So i do think there should be some....line....

Ok, I respect that you feel that way, but even then it would not hurt for the censor to be optional. If people are easily offended they can just keep getting those words in a redacted form.

I don't think this will get changed though, I was just wondering if it were so and apparently it isn't.

I'm bummed that an inquiry about foul language got a mod answer, but my question about non-foul words got no response.

    :(

This actually makes me cry at night, and feel like I'm singled out.

Apologies. Yes, the words are user configurable (in fact there are no default censored words). Ergo, if it's censored it's because we want it that way.

Personally I come from a culture in which swearing is extremely common. This can take people aback at times. With this in mind, I completely understand why the mods are very strict. :p
