I am a man and I play female characters because:

    1. I find it easier to play a game for long periods at a time if I am looking at and playing with a female character...:)

    2. I have found out people are willing to help out female characters more often if they seem to be in trouble.

    3. I am not looking to find my match over a game.

No! I am a Man, therefore I play Male characters. I Imaginatively identify with strong masculine characters. I do not understand how a man can play a female character, but who am I to judge, to each his own. Happy gaming girlyboys..ha!

Though I have made a few male characters, I mostly play female characters. Every time I create a male character, I get all giggly and lose concentration. Plus, I like being pretty. I'm a woman . . . probably should have mentioned that earlier.

I am a man and I play both. (You should add this option, by the way! ;) )
I don't favor any gender in particular when I create my characters.
I'm also a roleplayer, so sometimes, I create my characters based on what I feel like roleplaying at that moment - Sometimes it's a Male character, sometimes Female.
In any case, these are just pixels we're looking at - So whether it's a guy playing a female character, or a girl playing a male character, it's all fair game. Nothing weird about it, in my humble opinion. :)

I usually preplan my characters well in advance of actually creating them in game. In the past my preference has been for ranged female characters and melee male characters. But I think I might actually switch that up some in Wildstar.

I tend to alt heavily in games. The following list is in descending order of certainty. Currently I am leaning towards male Warrior, female Esper, male Spellslinger, and female Stalker. I also plan on playing a male [redacted]*, and an undecided [redacted]. The genders of these two redacted classes are less certain than that of the known classes, depending on what races ultimately end up being able to play as which classes.

I am male and I play both, depending which gender looks better of the particular race (Draenei Females vs. the atrocious males as example.)

Also like said before, if I play a game for long time, I rather look at cute sexy butt on the screen than a male arse, after all that's whats going to be on the screen most of the time. Would GloryHogXL rather stare at man's asses instead? ;-)

I'm a guy and I mostly play male genders but sometimes I'll play the female gender, it depends on the race and how I want my character to look :S

I mostly play MMOs with my wife, so I play male and she plays female, and we usually try and match our characters (ie, no nightelf with gnome) etc. I can see the appeal of the female toons but I wouldn't in a multi-player game.

For Mass Effect I made Sheppard a women. As I am drawn to strong female characters, and frankly she was the better voice actor. So I would do that again in those kind of RPGs, but for an MMO I want the character to represent me (or rather, my ideal me rather then my ideal partner).

Im a male and usualy play Male characters. I just feel more comfertable that way, When I play a female character I feel kind-of creepy. Not saying anyone who plays the opposit gender is creepy or anything, Though I did used to think that. I understand the numerous benefits of playing the opposite gender. Such as getting more help if you a guy playing a girl or getting harassed less as a girl playing a guy. Or finding the opposite gender more aesthetically pleasing. It's just when I play the opposite gender in a game it feel like, well, somethings missing...

I am a man and play female characters. I associate better with female characters, and sincerely wish I was female.

My own personal problems aside, they tend to look better, especially with light armours.

I always play a female character when possible. I guess the reason is that my father played a female undead in WoW. So yeah, you learn from your elders.
