The game doesn't seem too grindy to be honest, because even though the amount of exp u need to level increases each level, the amount of exp you gain for any individual thing also increases, so you level fairly consistently

In the open beta i got 2 classes to 20, and another 4 or 5 to 10+.

And yeah 20-30 goes by so quick because dungeons give so much exp, and so do fates/hunting log, you don't even need to quest. I can't really comment post 30 but I imagine it stays similarly steady

I doubt it had anything to do with the game and if you bought a new card I hope you went with the 760 gtx at least over the 660 ti if you spent that much money.

I was in closed betas 2 and 3.

I will not be playing ARR when it is released.

The reason? Combat! Its such as a shame as the rest of the game is really nice, but man, the combat just flat out sucks! Firstly, the aesthetics are aweful. Every single skill has over the top unnecessary flashes that obscure your view. In a group setting you just can't see what you are fighting!

However, the biggest problem with combat, in my opinion, is the lack of skill required. Each class receives quite a limited set of abilities so at best your rotation is going to be limited. However, many of the skills are redundant whilst solo so standard rotations end up being just 2 or 3 skills. The buffs, yeh, there end up being a lot of them. But, they are on long cooldowns so they don't take up much thought, plus, you just end up putting them on macros anyway.

The result is that working out optimum rotations takes about 30seconds, a monkey could do it! Actual combat is mindless repetition of an easy rotation. I never, ever felt like I was in control; I was merely going through the motions. I never once felt "ah, if I had played better then I would have won", because it was not possible to play better!

"Skill" in ARR isn't skill at all, it is simply the result of grinding gear and playing the meta game. There is virtually no difference between a monkey facerolling keys and an MMO god playing out a carefully selected skill rotation. As a result, combat in ARR never once left me feeling satisfied and as the majority of my in game time is spent in combat, I just can't commit to the game.

Which is a shame! The world looks great! Granted, it is now all heavily instanced so you dont get the open world feeling any more, but each zone is carefully crafted and vibrant. The creatures you fight are great (though, it takes a long time to find anything "cool") and the class design and armour design is exactly what you want from a FF title. Crafting was actually enjoyable too, character design was fun. Even the story lines were vaguely enjoyable which is unusual for an MMO.

However, if the majority of my time is going to be spent doing something unenjoyable (combat) then there is no point me buying it.

I would say that while you're not wrong in that the combat isn't very new or necessarily exciting, it's no worse than any other MMO combat from the last decade (there's even a mini telegraph system!). I would prefer combat similar to Tera or Neverwinter - but this combat is essentially the same standard combat that's existed forever. I guess I'm saying that if this combat is boring to you (which I can totally understand), it must be hard to find a decent MMO, because to me it feels like industry standard combat

My biggest push for people to play this game is "what else are you doing?" I don't know of hardly anyone that's deeply involved in a game at the moment, it seems to be a dry time of year. So, the game looks great, it's entertaining enough, people should check it out - it's not going to change your world view on video games...but honestly, what are you gonna do, play another game of LoL or DoTA 2? Just sit on your hands till Wildstar or ESO comes out?

Whilst you are kind of right, it is definitely the worst combat I've seen.

I suppose what I'm getting at is the lack of ability to improve.

A typical-yet-far-better combat system is LotROs. I'll use the loremaster as my example but just about every class applies.

The loremaster in lotro is a pet class that specialises in crowd control and debuffing. It has some damaging skills but not that many. When I first started playing the loremaster, I didn't have much clue and as a result I basically just ran around, threw fireballs at enemies, sent my pets in to attack and then occasionally CC'd stuff. As I leveled I gained more skills but my rotation was pretty random and mostly just used everything that wasn't on cooldown. As a squishy, this approach meant I could happily level through the game but if I pulled more than a few mobs then I was pretty much guarunteed to die.

Now, eventually I got better at playing the loremaster class. By changing the way I used my skills, I became able to CC vast amounts of enemies and then pick them off one by one. Eventually, I was able to AoE large groups of enemies with ease. I changed pets so that I could heal myself, rather than do damage to the enemies. I could eventually solo small fellowship quests (3mans) and a few fellowship quests (6mans).

Now, the game didn't make me better: I made myself better. Through deeper understanding of the class and the game mechanics I was able to improve my performance and achieve greater things.

Final Fantasy XIV: ARR doesn't give you the opportunity to improve because the combat system is too easy and too restricted. The outcome of each and every fight is determined by your level, class, gear and luck. Player skill doesn't enter in to the equation because facerolling skills in ARR gives you a similar output to carefully pulling off a rotation. Now, because player skill doesn't enter into the equation, there is no sense of achievement to be gained from combat. Even worse, they have combat macros! With these you can literally macro your combat rotation, including all your buffs, so that during most combat all you do is hit 1 button every 6 seconds or so!
It is a really subtle difference I guess as the combat looks the same as most MMOs

As to your final comment, lol, yeh, I do struggle to find a decent MMO these days! I'm an intelligent guy who's been playing computer games for 20+ years and I've simply run out of patience for shallow, meaningless games. I want games to challenge me intellectually but unfortunately most games are aimed at the "average" person and so they aren't intellectually challenging.

I know it's not the game, would have probably die on another game too. I had to by a temp card lower (money always money). The 660 is now with Asus for a repair/replace tune up. Hope it comes back healthy.

I ran the downloadable benchmark video on max (cause I'm a glutton for punishment I guess) with my GTX470. Now it's a bit dated. It still rated excellent, but the main GPU was running from 100 to 102 C. I stepped it down one notch and it runs at 94-97C, about normal for this card with graphics intensive software. I've had it a couple years and these temps don't bother it at all. No, extra fans have no effect.

Hell, I bought a 640 GT (up from a 250 GTX) and it actually scored less on the benchmark than the 250 I had before. I think I may be at the upper limit of the rest of my computer, which may be why i'm not seeing any improvement. Hope to have this resolved before wildstar is out though!

I got an Archer up to level 14 before the beta ended. So much fun! I hadn't even tried an Archer yet. But between Archer, Conjurer, Gladiator, and Marauder the most fun I had with the game was Gladiator, so I'll be playing that class live most likely. Wanted to try out the Gridania story since I did all of Limsa Lominsa in Beta 3. Debating on rerolling come live to try out Ul'dah.

I also really loved crafting in the game, I'm considering doing it full time instead of the usual tanking shenanigans.

If anyone's getting Error 3 when trying to sign up for early access, make sure your language under your profile is set to the correct language. For some reason people in the US are getting their default language (even if you've chosen English [US] in the past) set to English (UK). I just did this simple thing and got it working no problem after trying for the past day and getting only Error 3's.

There's a good thread about it here.

Nice to see confirmation from Yoshi that we should be out of the "error 90000 and 3102" woods now.

Quick question for anyone that might know. Are they planning on allowing more people onto the servers? Just wondering if I'm going to have to find a newer server with extra space so I can play with some of my friends.

I wouldn't worry about it. Last beta was open so there was more players there just for the beta. There will be less members on now. Still looks like a really good amount of people are going to be playing tho!

So I wasn't able to participate in the open beta. My wife and I were mulling over checking ARR out this weekend (sad that we missed the open beta) when it hits its wider launch. We were curious, now that early access began, how people are feeling about it? Just generally speaking (which I know is kind of silly question, but there's not much specific at the moment!).

One of the worst launches since years. Even SWTOR did it better than this and that's saying a lot.
