Hi all, since my scanner isn't working haven't been able to get you a picture of one of the characters I plan to play, but here's her story. 'short story' in the loosest sense of the word, ended up bein' like 5 pages in word. I'm sure it will hit TLDR very quickly for you all, so gonna split it up into short-ish segments and release one segment a day to keep you from havin to read a whole book in one sitting ^-^'
PS: Yes, I know I could probably edit it, cut out a lot of the exess weight and make it shorter, but I'm too lazy to do that right now... =P

Dangit, it's not showing the paragraph indents... hang on

    Segment 1:

It had been years since she had last thought of home, and for good reason. However her maddened kinsman lying at her feet brought to the surface long suppressed memories. The green, wild plains of nexus fell away, giving way to neatly landscaped green grass outlined by white marble walkways, tall silver spires reaching into the sky behind it. Kunialis remembered how close she had been to dodging the bullet, how close she was to never having to worry if her friends were safe from herself.

Kunialis was a veteran at the time, having served five years of guard duty, training, and the occasional actual firefight. She had left Grismara’s Planetary Defense active duty, using the educational aid the military offered to begin energy weapon science and theory at the University of Gorealish Peninsula. It was the leading university on the planet for military science. She had befriended her roommate quite quickly, a young girl named Saveritas. Saveritas was studying armor and shield theory, and the two of them had spent a great many nights comparing notes, seeing what weapons would punch through what shields. They were happy days, filled with girlish giggling and nonsensical shenanigans. But apparently that wasn’t good enough, thanks to some big shot up till then Kunialis had only occasionally heard of, some Dr. Victor Lazarin guy.

He made a big announcement about discovering an elixir that would grant everyone eternal life, even drank the elixir himself right there on the live holovid, to a crowd of cheering press reporters. Kunialis remembers his smug grin even to this day.

It wasn’t like the Mordesh needed eternal life; they already had the longest lifespan in all dominion controlled space. They were also the leaders in medical tech. But the thought of never having to say goodbye to anyone ever again was just a little too appealing. Kunialis had gone directly to the nearest drop-point to pick up some Everlife Elixir for Saveritas and herself. Upon returning to the dorms she encountered a rather unusual complication… Saveritas was scared of taking medicine. Kunialis had so many immunizations and health boosters injected into her during active service, she thought nothing of imbibing a new medicine. But Saveritas was a civ who had entered the university right out of high school, and throughout her life she was always afraid of taking medicines. Even though Grismara lead the galaxy’s medical field, they had yet to invent a medication that did not have possible side effects, and Saveritas would rather die of the mumbles than suffer… ‘Anal leakage’.

It took Kunialis almost a week to convince Saveritas to join her in taking the elixir, telling the younger girl she would not take it unless they both took it. Saveritas kept insisting Kunialis should take it, and not let a scaredy-cat little girl stand between her and eternal life, but Kunialis insisted. Hindsight being 20/20 and all, Kunialis now wishes the little girl had won over that argument… But on Kunialis’ birthday, to celebrate her 30th year of life, the two of them had sat in a pizza parlor, raising glasses filled with the Everlife Elixir in a toast to immortality.

Only two days after they had taken the elixir there was an announcement on the news that the Everlife Elixir had some possible side effects, and that anyone who had taken it should report to a medical facility for further treatment. Kunialis was still feeling fine at the time, so she didn’t bother with it, especially since every person on the whole planet would be at the hospitals. Saveritas was looking a little sick, though. She didn’t want to go to the hospital either; instead she distracted herself by filling the air with a constant ‘I told you so’.Then one day Kunialis woke up with pain tearing at her stomach, when she looked in the mirror, it appeared as though the bottom area of the rib cage was starting to rot, like a dead body that had been left unburied for too long. That couldn’t be good…

    Segment 2:
Kunialis found Saveritas in their bathroom, curled up next to the toilet. Multiple areas of her body had a very unnatural tint to the skin, layers of flesh sloughing off like she was hit by an acid based chemical weapon. Kunialis threw the girls arm over her shoulder and carried her from the dorm. Just outside there was a man who appeared to be picking books up off the ground. Kunialis had more important things to worry about, and didn’t even think twice about it until Saveritas started shouting “He’s eating him!” Kunialis turned to see her roommate was right; the man wasn’t picking up books, but rather the entrails of the obviously deceased plasma rifle theory TA. Saveritas’ shouting drew the madman’s attention, however, and he turned, half his face a muddle of rotted flesh, right eye hanging limply from his skull. Kunialis thanked her military training as she let Saveritas drop to the ground, twin disruptors spinning out from under her coat, sights lining up on the rapidly approaching psychopath. The familiar high pitched whine as the bolt left the barrel, and the nutjob was sporting a new ventilation shaft for his brain.

The horror did not stop there, screams were echoing through the courtyard now, someone was trying to climb out a dorm window but something inside was pulling her back in, there was blood and guts smeared on several other windows. Kunialis looked down to pick Saveritas back up, but stopped. Her younger friend had an unfamiliar wild look in her eyes, and she was reaching for Kunialis’ leg, mouth opening wide. No, Kunialis thought, not you too. She kicked at the younger girl, hoping to snap her out of her madness, but it did not work. Kunialis tried to move away from her, but Saveritas stood up, a twisted smile on her face, and charged. The scream of disrupter fire drowned out the unnatural sound coming from the girls mouth, her smoking body falling at Kunialis’ feet.

That was just the first day. Kunialis tried to get back to her home, in the capitol city, to check on her family. Her father, mother, and little sister still lived there, and at this time, Kunialis was very worried. All public transportation was down, and the roads were too jammed to get anywhere in a vehicle, so Kunialis started the long trek on foot. Though the drugs she had been given during her military service were fighting the degeneration, they were losing. As days went by, more and more of her body started dying. And not just her body… her brain started translating scenes of mass carnage into images of a buffet line. There were times that she would completely blank out, only to suddenly be yanked back to reality by the scream and kick of one of her disruptors going off, body subconsciously reacting to an incoming threat. One time she returned to sanity standing over some other lady, her heart torn from her chest, and something very tough and slimy in Kunialis’ mouth. Thankfully one of the other mad ones had tried to take her food away, or Kunialis feared she may never have re-awoken.

Two weeks after starting her journey, Kunialis made it to the suburbs of her hometown. Hope lifted in her heart, though there were maddened creatures here too, the destruction did not look nearly as bad. There was a chance of maybe someone surviving in some of the undamaged buildings. She searched far and wide, but had no luck initially. But just as despair started to set in, she saw a familiar shape. The broad shoulders, purple ears, long white hair… father was alive still!

Kunialis called out to the man, running forward. He turned, and Kunialis stopped. His entire center torso was rotted away, entrails lying at his feet. His eyes burned with the madness. In his left hand he held what had initially looked like a lollypop, but on closer observation Kunialis could see the stick was actually a small spinal cord, the top a small head of a familiar seven year old girl, face skewed permanently with the fear and pain she had felt at death. Sorrow, rage, fear, hatred… Kunialis felt them all as her pistols kicked again and again, her screams lost under the disrupter bolts tearing through the air. She would have emptied the clips, but with her ability to reload the weapons through magic, well, she stopped firing when her fingers started to ache. All that remained of her father and sister were a pair of smoking boots.

    Segment 3:
Time passed in a blur of struggling for life, trying to maintain her sanity. Days passed, or were they weeks? Kunialis eventually found herself outside of a military compound, and jumped as she heard the sound of a launcher going off. Survivors! She ran to the primary defensive wall, where the sound had come from. She found piles of dead corpses intermingled with the traffic jam of ground vehicles. Standing on top of the wall she saw a soldier in heavy metal armor with a pair of small bots by his side, heavy launcher in his hands. Kunialis approached the wall excited to finally find another survivor, but when she called out to him, his launcher immediately swung her direction, and the car behind her erupted in streams of molten metal. Kunialis dove for cover swearing heavily. She peeked around the vehicle to see the man’s bots not attacking her, but rather looking at their boss with a confused facial visual on their display.

After a few more attempts to talk to him, and only one more erupting vehicle, the man finally apologized and invited Kunialis up on the wall with him. Joxel was his name. He explained his eyes had rotted from his head, and so was using sound and the massive aoe of his launcher to keep his post free of the ‘biters’. Kunialis joined him, but took a peek under his helmet just to verify he wasn’t just trying to excuse his trying to use her for target practice. Two large black holes stared back at her. Yep, blind as can be.

The two of them stayed together for several days, Kunialis running off to fetch supplies from time to time, Joxel holding the line. Others in the compound had failed to hold their positions, and there were no other survivors inside that Kunialis encountered. The military men and women had fought well, there were only a few biters she had to deal with. They talked about random stuff, trying to keep each other from falling into the madness, but very purposefully avoiding topics of family or past experiences. Eventually a horde of biters showed up at their door step, heralding the end for the unusual pair. Launcher rounds thudded away, disrupter bolts screamed, artillery bot rounds beat a steady rhythm, but the horde kept coming.

Suddenly the whir of a chain gun joined their chorus, rounds decimating the front lines of the horde. Two fliers came to a hover over their position, weapons opening up on full power, troops repelling onto the wall and firing a wild assortment of weapons into the mad ones. Kunialis was about to thank them when a pair wearing full body enviro suits fired resonators set on stun at her. Her last thought as blackness took her was a small hope that Joxel accidentally mistakes them for more biters and frags them all.

    Segment 4:

When Kunialis next opened her eyes she was strapped very securely to a bed, her clothing and equipment removed, only a thin white gown covering her body. A figure was bent over her arm, clamping some sort glass vial to it. She remained silent and watched as the figure then began filling the vial with a strange blue liquid. She spoke, asking what that was. Her words seemed to catch the man off guard, startling him out of his thoughts. He turned to her, his face becoming visible through the window on the enviro suit. Kunialis recognized him, though this time there was none of that sickening smug smile on his face. Rather Dr. Lazarin looked like a man on the last thread, exhaustion, pain and sadness etched on his rotting face. Kunialis almost felt sorry for him… almost. Instead, she started shouting at him, blaming everything on him, accusing him of improperly testing the elixir, accusing him of murdering her friend, her family, and everyone else she could think of. She was sure some guards would rush in and shut her up but none did. Instead Lazarin sat quietly, absorbing all the verbal abuse she was throwing at him.

When she finally stopped the doctor quietly explained that he had given her the Vitalus Serum, a medicine that would keep her body from further degrading due to the Contagion. However he also had to install several cybernetics into her body to counter the damage already caused. He then removed the straps from her and told her the other survivors were manning the defenses of the medical school and they could probably use her help. She was unsure whether or not to try to kill him with her bare hands then and there, but decided against it. It would be more painful for him to continue living with his massive failure. She stormed out swearing to at least be there when that dick finally met his end. She passed a pair of guards on her way out, but they looked more sympathetic with her than protective of the doctor.

By the time she re-equipped herself and joined the defensive perimeter, the last days were already upon them. Exile forces had already agreed to help smuggle the survivors off planet, and some ships had already arrived. Kunialis met Joxel again, who was now sporting a pair of cybernetic eyes, and was also in a very flirty mood now that he could finally see his ‘pretty lil gundancer’. Kunialis just laughed. She and Joxel volunteered to be part of the last fireteam to defend the compound while everyone else evacuated. Beside a combat chaplain, a notorious outlaw, and a feisty vehicle mechanic they held the defensive perimeter as a couple hordes tried to ruin the other survivor’s escape. They even exchanged fire with some dominion scouts sent down to find out how the eradication of the Mordesh was coming along.

When the team finally stepped aboard the last ship leaving, biters were already destroying the school, fires erupting throughout the formerly last pristine haven on Grismara. When they sat in the passenger cabin, a young blonde human walked back and asked the team if there was anything she could do for them. Joxel immediately asked her if she could sing them a cheerful song. Kunialis was not the only one to look at him curiously. The girl was really embarrassed and said she wasn’t a very good singer, but Joxel insisted. So the kid began to sing. Joxel leaned back, turning off his visual sensors and smiled a little. Kunialis saw him pull out a locket and open it subconsciously. Inside was a picture of a teenaged mordesh girl with long blond hair sinning on a stage, underneath it the words ‘Hope you come home soon, daddy’ written on it. Kunialis understood. From this day forward all mordesh would have to find something to cling to to keep themselves from falling into despair. She began to wonder what it is that she would be able to cling to…

A roaring sound yanked Kunialis out of her dark memories, a feline creature already midair leaping at her. A quick gate spell and twenty spent rounds later, and the beast was not but a pile of holey goo. Kunialis smiled. Nexus was a good place for her. Nothing like a planet wide weapons free zone with multiple target rich environments to keep a girl happy. She wondered if her husband had finally finished building their house. Not that he was a slow worker; Joxel was just prone to distraction by anyone passing by with a story and a song…

Segment 2 up. The creepy one 0.o

Just my take on the horror the mordesh felt when they began to not only see others turning to zombies, but had to fight against falling to it themselves...

    Aaand, segment 4 posted.

Of course, none of this is official lore, I don't know what detail the wildstar lore team has gone into on the last days of Grismara, but this is all off the top of my head. please don't kill me pappy if I messed something up in this. ^-^'

This was a story that popped into my head after reading the Mordesh race page, I just never got around to putting it down on the computer till just this week.

Kinda wished I coulda spent more time on this, inserting actual dialogue (some funny convos between Kunialis and Joxel on the wall), showing more how much of a constant fight it was to maintain sanity (Kunialis sometimes shooting inanimate objects just to clear her head as her thoughts turned dark), the reason Kunialis was packing guns at the university in the first place, and especially fleshing out the final defenders' story as it is a very cool one... (Fireteam Fatalis, mismatched group of survivors holding the final defensive lines as twilight fell upon Grismara) Buuuut, to fill all that out would be another 5 to 10 pages on word, and by far tldr. Meh. Hope any who read this story enjoy it!
